Croatia is divided in two climate regions – continental (inland) and Mediterranean (coastal line). The north coast is usually a few degrees colder than the south.  According to ministry of tourism in 2012th these were average temperatures on the Adriatic coast:

  • June: 24,71°C/ 76,48°F
  • July: 27,71°C/ 81,88°F
  • August: 27,13°C/80,83°F

These are the most extreme temperatures on Croatian coast:

  • January and February: about 5°C/41°F, in really extreme conditions it goes down to 0°C/32°F (Zagreb: about 1°C/33,8°F)
  • June, July, August: about 35°C/ 95°F (Zagreb: 20°C/68°F)

An annual amount of rainfall is 818,7 mm, average number of sunny days is 129,57 and the average number of cloudy days is 61,71. Rain showers are possible even during summer so be prepared. On the coast (especially the south coast) snow is a phenomenon and it usually happens once a year. In continental Croatia, including Zagreb, it is more common.

During sunny summer days, the sun can be pretty strong and exhausting so it is recommendable to always have a bottle of water by your side. Also, it is better to avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.. If you really have to leave the shade then use a hat and it is good to always wear sun protection.

Weather in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, as the rest of the Croatian coast, has a Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild and the temperature rarely goes below 0°C/32°F. During winter, there’s a possibility of a wind called Bura that lowers the temperature quite a bit. An interesting fact is that the other wind called Jugo, which is a mild wind and brings rain, is often more hated because its negative effect on the psyche. In the old times of the Dubrovnik Republic, crimes committed during this wind were punished less severely.

These are average temperatures:

  • January: about 8°C/46,4°F
  • February: about 7,5°C/45,5°F
  • April: 14,5°C/58,1°F
  • May: 18,7°C/65.66°F
  • July: 28,2°C/82,76°F
  • August: 27,7°C/C81,86°F
  • September: 23,5°C/74,3°F


In 2013, Dubrovnik had 162 sunny days and 53 cloudy days. The amount of rainfall was 1202,5 mm.

Weather in Zagreb


Zagreb has a continental climate.  From December to March snow is very common for Zagreb area.

These are average temperatures:

  • June, July, August: from 20 °C/68 °F up to 35 °C/95 °F
  • January, February: 1 °C/ 33,8 °F (the lowest temperatures are between -1 °C/30,2 °F and -5°C/23 °F)

Average temperatures:

  • January: 7,5 °C/45,5 °F
  • February: 5,0 °C/41 °F
  • April: 14,4 °C/57,92 °F
  • May: 19,2 °C/66,56 °F
  • July: 29,1 °C/ 84,38 °F
  • August: 28,6 °C/83,48 °F
  • September: 22,8 °C/73,04 °C

In 2013, Split had 124 sunny days and 67 cloudy ones. The amount of rainfall for the same year was 738 mm.

Weather in Šibenik

Average temperatures:

  • January: 6,6 °C/43,88 °F
  • February: 4,4 °C/39,92 °F
  • April: 13,8 °C/56,84 °F
  • May: 18 °C/64,4 °F
  • July: 27,8 °C/82,04 °F
  • August: 27,3 °C/81,14 °F
  • September: 21,6 °C/70,88 °F


In 2013 Šibenik had 129 sunny days and 49 cloudy days, while the amount of rainfall was 666 mm.

Weather in Zadar

The wind called bura, previously mentioned, is not so strong in the city of Zadar because mountain Velebit shields the town. In the surrounding area it can be pretty strong, so you can find a shelter from it in Zadar, if you ever find yourself here during the winter.

  • February: 4,4 °C/39,92 °F
  • April: 13,8 °C/56,84 °F
  • May: 17,6 °C/63,68 °F
  • July: 27,1 °C/80,78 °F
  • August: 26,1 °C/78,98 °F
  • September: 21,1 °C/69,98 °F

In 2013 Zadar had 119 sunny days and 56 cloudy days, the amount of rainfall was 920,8 mm.

Weather in Rijeka

Average temperatures:

  • January: 6,0 °C/42,8 °F
  • February: 2,2 °C/35,96 °F
  • April: 12,8 °C/55,04 °F
  • May: 17,4 °C/63,32 °F
  • July: 26,1 °C/78,98 °F
  • August: 26,2 °C/79,16 °F
  • September: 20,5 °C/68,9 °F

In the northern part of Adriatic the climate is a bit colder. The snow is not often, but it is more common for this area than in the rest of the coast. 
In 2013, Rijeka had 86 sunny days and 107 cloudy days, the amount of rainfall was 1695,9 mm.

Weather in Pula

The climate is similar as Rijeka’s, but the temeprature is usually a few degrees higher.

Average temperatures:

  • January: 5,7 °C/42,26 °F
  • February: 2,3 °C/36,14 °F
  • April: 13,2 °C/55,76 °F
  • May: 17,8 °C/ 64,04 °F
  • July: 27 °C/80,6 °F
  • August: 26,6 °C/79,88 °F
  • September: 21,3 °C/70,34 °F

In 2013, the amount of rainfall was 454,3 mm.
